Immigration To Russia

For a country that, in the last century, was not known for its welcoming on immigrants especially those from the likes of the USA or the UK, Russia has undergone quite a radical transformation in recent years as it tries to keep up with some of the more developed countries in the western world and also to try and encourage an influx of foreign investment into the country. Indeed, whereas the country was once almost reliant on self sufficiency at an industrial and manufacturing level it now boasts nearly $300 billion worth of exports coming into the nation every year and this has risen and risen over the past decade and is projected to grow even further in the years ahead. That being said, is there anything we should know about Russian immigration?

Until recently, Russia did not have a proper immigration policy or system of control in place to stem the tide of immigrants coming into the country post Soviet Union and this has meant that the country has actually become the second in the world (behind the USA) in terms of how many migrants it allows in – estimated to be around 200,000 per year officially with a few million unofficially. Indeed, its population has been declining as well meaning that there is a shortage of labour and its economic needs are suffering as a result. Over the past few years the government has passed several laws that will allow foreigners to gain migrant status and it is very much encouraging the amount of people coming into the country and it is also hoping to stimulate foreign business growth too. With investment at a high the immigration law isĀ  hoping to allow foreign companies to grow in the Russian economy and provide a much needed boost to an already depleted a short labour market.
